How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
