How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one the most versatile herbs that you can use in your home. Basil is great for flavouring dishes, as well as adding flavor to soups and sauces, pasta, and desserts. Here are some ways to grow basil indoors.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an annually-living plant. It will not survive beyond one season if the location is not right. Basil likes full sunlight but can be tolerant of partial shade. If you're growing it outside, find a spot that has good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted two weeks before the last frost date. In small pots with potting mixture, sow seeds about 1/2 inch deep. Clear plastic wrap should be used to cover the pots. Germination takes approximately ten days. Once they are germinated, transfer them to a protected area where the temperatures are at 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once they are large enough to handle, transfer the seedlings. Transplant the seedlings into larger pots by removing the plastic wrap. To drain excess moisture, fill each container with potting mixture. Add more potting mixes as necessary. The containers should be placed in a sunny location or under indirect lighting. Keep the plants hydrated to avoid wilting.
  4. After frost danger has passed, add a thick layer to mulch. This will protect them against cold weather and reduce water losses.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil needs to be watered regularly in order for it to thrive. A rain gauge can be used to measure how much water plants need. Use a timer, which will turn off the irrigation when there is no rain.
  6. Take your basil out at the peak of its life. For bushier growth, pick leaves more often.
  7. Use paper towels or screens to dry the leaves. Store dried leaves in glass jars or bags in the refrigerator.
