FAQ

What is a planting plan?

A planting calendar is a list that lists plants that should be planted at specific times throughout the year. The goal is for plants to grow at their best while minimizing stress. For example, early spring crops such as peas, spinach, and lettuce should be sown after the last frost date. Later spring crops include cucumbers, squash, and summer beans. Fall crops include carrots and cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowers, kale, potatoes, and others.

What type of lighting is best to grow plants indoors?

Florescent lights work well for growing plants indoors because they emit less heat than incandescent bulbs. They provide steady lighting without dimming or flickering. Both regular and compact fluorescent fluorescent bulbs are available. CFLs require 75% less energy than traditional bulbs.

Can I grow fruit trees in pots?

Yes! Yes, pots are possible to grow fruit trees if space is tight. You should make sure that your pot has drainage holes to keep excess moisture from rotting the tree. The pot should be deep enough to hold the rootball. This will prevent the tree from being stressed.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
