FAQ

What's the difference?

Hydroponic gardening relies on nutrient rich water rather than soil to provide nutrients for plants. Aquaponics blends fish tanks with plants to create a self sufficient ecosystem. It's almost like having a farm right at home.

How long can I keep an indoor plant alive?

Indoor plants can live for many years. It is vital to repot your plants every few months in order to encourage new growth. Repotting is easy. All you have to do is remove the soil and put in fresh compost.

What is a plant calendar?

A planting calendar is a list that lists plants that should be planted at specific times throughout the year. The goal is to maximise growth while minimizing stress. The last frost date should be used to sow early spring crops, such as spinach, lettuce, and beans. Summer beans, squash, cucumbers and squash are all later spring crops. Fall crops include carrots and cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowers, kale, potatoes, and others.

How many hours of light does a plant need?

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
