FAQ

What is the difference between aquaponic gardening or hydroponic?

Hydroponic gardening makes use of nutrient-rich water rather than soil to grow plants. Aquaponics combines fish tanks with plants to create a self-sufficient ecosystem. It's like having your farm right in your home.

Which seeds should start indoors?

A tomato seed makes the best seed for indoor planting. Tomatoes can be grown quickly and they bear fruit all year. It is important to be careful when planting tomatoes in containers. Planting tomatoes too early can lead to soil drying out which could lead roots to rot. Plant diseases like bacterial disease can quickly kill plants.

Does my backyard have enough room for a vegetable garden?

If you don’t have a garden yet, you may wonder if there is enough room to start one. Yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It only takes some planning. For example, you can build raised beds just 6 inches high. Or, you could use containers instead of raised beds. You'll still be able to get plenty of produce in any way.

What is a planting calendar?

A planting calendar lists the plants that should all be planted at various times during the year. The goal of the planting calendar is to increase plant growth while minimizing stress. The last frost date should be used to sow early spring crops, such as spinach, lettuce, and beans. Later spring crops include cucumbers, squash, and summer beans. Fall crops include potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and broccoli.

What size space is required for a vegetable garden?

A good rule of thumb is that one square foot of soil requires 1/2 pound of seed. Therefore, 100 pounds of seeds is required for a surface of 10 feet x 10 feet (3 m x 3 m).

What is the best vegetable gardening layout?

The location of your home will dictate the layout of your vegetable garden. You should plant vegetables together if you live in a city. However, if you live in a rural area, you should space out your plants for maximum yield.

What kind of lighting works best for growing plants indoors?

Florescent lights work well for growing plants indoors because they emit less heat than incandescent bulbs. They provide steady lighting without dimming or flickering. Fluorescent bulbs can be purchased in regular and compact fluorescent versions. CFLs consume up to 75% less electricity than traditional bulbs.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
