FAQ

How big is a vegetable gardening space?

A good rule is that 1 square foot of soil needs 1/2 pound. So if you have an area of 10 feet by 10 feet (3 meters by 3 meters), you'll need 100 pounds of seeds.

Can I grow vegetables in my backyard?

You might be wondering if you have enough space to grow a vegetable garden if you don't have one. The answer to that question is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It just takes some planning. For example, you could build raised beds only 6 inches high. Or, you could use containers instead of raised beds. You'll still get lots of produce.

How many hours does a plant need to get light?

It depends on which plant it is. Some plants need 12 hours of direct sun per day. Others prefer 8 to 10 hours of indirect sun. Vegetables require at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

What's the difference?

Hydroponic gardening relies on nutrient rich water rather than soil to provide nutrients for plants. Aquaponics uses fish tanks to grow plants. It's almost like having a farm right at home.

How do you prepare soil for a vegetable gardening?

Preparing soil to grow vegetables is very simple. You must first remove all weeds from the area you wish to plant vegetables. After that, add organic material such as composted soil, leaves, grass clips, straw or wood chips. Then water the plants well and wait for them to sprout.

What's the best way to keep my indoor plant alive?

Indoor plants can survive for many years. However, it's important to repot your plant every few months to help promote new growth. Repotting is simple. Just remove the old soil, and then add fresh compost.

Do I need special equipment to grow vegetables in my garden?

Non, really. All you need are a trowel or shovel and a watering can.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
