How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
