How To

Basil Growing Tips

Basil is one among the most versatile herbs you could use in your kitchen. Basil is great to add flavor to dishes, sauces or pastas. Here are some tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an annual and will not live more than one season if it isn't in the right spot. It can tolerate partial shade but prefers full sun. If you plan to grow it outside, make sure there is good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should not be planted more than two weeks prior to the last frost date. Plant the seeds in small pots that are 1/2 inch deep. Wrap the pots with clear plastic and place them in a sunny area. Germination usually takes about ten days. Once germinated, move the pots into a shaded area where temperatures stay around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. When the seedlings reach maturity, you can transplant them. Remove the plastic wrap and transplant the seedlings into larger containers. Add potting mix to each container. You can add more potting mix if necessary. The containers should be placed in a sunny location or under indirect lighting. Mist the plants daily to prevent wilting.
  4. After the danger of frost has passed, apply a thick layer of mulch over the top of the plants. This will prevent them from frost damage and help to reduce water loss.
  5. You should water your plants often. Basil needs to be watered regularly in order for it to thrive. A rain gauge can be used to measure how much water plants need. Use a timer, which will turn off the irrigation when there is no rain.
  6. Make sure to pick basil right when it is at its peak. To encourage bushier growth, pick the leaves often.
  7. Use paper towels or screens to dry the leaves. Dry the leaves in glass jars and bags in the fridge.
