How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one of your most versatile herbs. It's great for flavoring dishes, adding flavor to soups, sauces, salads, pasta, and even desserts. Here are some tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Be careful about where you place it. Basil is an annual plant and will only live one season if it's not in the right place. It can tolerate partial shade but prefers full sun. If you're growing it outside, find a spot that has good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should always be planted at least 2 weeks before the last frost date. Plant the seeds in small pots that are 1/2 inch deep. Clear plastic wrap should be used to cover the pots. Germination typically takes around ten days. Once germinated, move the pots into a shaded area where temperatures stay around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them. Remove the plastic wrap and transplant the seedlings into larger containers. Pour the potting mix into each container. Add gravel or pebbles to drain excess moisture. As necessary, you can add more potting material. Place the containers in direct sunlight or in a sunny window. Mist the plants regularly to keep them from wilting.
  4. Apply a thick layer mulch to the top of your plants after the danger of frost has passed. This will protect the plants from freezing weather and decrease water loss.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil needs to be watered regularly in order for it to thrive. You can use a rain gauge or a water gauge to determine the amount of water that your plants need. Use a timer to automatically turn off irrigation during dry spells.
  6. Make sure to pick basil right when it is at its peak. To encourage bushier growth, pick the leaves often.
  7. Use paper towels to dry leaves. Place the leaves in glass jars, bags or in the refrigerator.
