Indoor gardening allows you to grow plants

You can grow many plants in an indoor garden. Although vegetables such lettuce and tomatoes take longer time to grow, they are still possible to grow. Indoor gardening is slower than outdoor gardening. Your plants will grow best if they get 14 to 20 hours of daylight per day. To add moisture to your air, you could also use grow lights and a cool-mist humidityifier.

Root crops are another option for an indoor garden. These plants can be grown in containers that contain soil, but they will require supplemental lighting. They require good light to develop their flavor and color. However, some plants can be grown indoors, despite the limited sunlight available. Plants that can grow in containers or in soil less than 10 cm should be considered. Over-fertilizing them can result in spindly roots, and lush green leaves. Try shorter varieties like Chantenay carrots.

The right soil to use for your indoor garden

There are several things to remember when you choose the soil for your indoor plant. The first is to make sure that the soil you choose will be able to absorb the water your plants need to thrive. You could end up with a mixture of garden soil and indoor soil that is very wet. This can cause serious damage to your plants. You can also prevent your plants from developing the correct root system by using heavier soil. A soil should have a balanced pH and contain regular nutrients.

Indoor gardens need soil that is strong enough to support roots. Topsoil, for example, can be harmful to plants because it contains bugs, seeds, and pathogens. Coconut coir is a better choice for indoor gardening, as it is lightweight and retains water while releasing it quickly. A mix of peat moss, perlite and sand can be used for succulents.

How to grow basil

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. Basil is great for flavoring foods, including soups, sauces and pastas. Here are some tips for growing basil indoors at home.

  1. It is important to choose the right location. Basil is an annually-living plant. It will not survive beyond one season if the location is not right. It can tolerate partial shade but prefers full sun. If you're growing it outside, find a spot that has good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted two weeks before the last frost date. Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep in small pots filled with potting mix. Cover the pots with clear plastic wrap and keep the pots in a warm area out of direct sunlight. Germination takes approximately ten days. Once the pots are germinated, you can move them to a place where temperatures remain around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seedlings are big enough to handle, transplant them. Place the seedlings in larger containers and remove the plastic wrap. Add potting mix to each container. You can add more potting mix if necessary. Place the containers outside in direct light or in a sunny area. Keep the plants hydrated to avoid wilting.
  4. Once the danger of frost is over, cover the plants with a thick mulch layer. This will keep them warm and prevent water loss.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil needs regular watering to thrive. Use a rain gauge to check how much water the plants need. Also, use a timer to turn off the irrigation system during dry spells automatically.
  6. When your basil reaches its peak, pick it. For bushier growth, pick leaves more often.
  7. Dry the leaves on paper towels or screens. Keep the dried leaves in glass containers or bags in a refrigerator.
