How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
